A dampness or musty odor is present in your home? The seasonal heat has brought out this bad odor, and you don’t know how to get rid of it? SOS Odours develops practical solutions and creates effective products that cater specifically to the various odor problems found in houses. Learn how to remove the smell of humidity by applying the following tips.
Find the source of the humidity odor problem
It’s important to find the source of the bad odor and to solve this problem before applying any treatment. Here are some indicators that can confirm the presence of a humidity problem in your home:
- Black-spotted plasterboard
- Rotting wooden surface
- Spots on a concrete surface
- Condensation on windows
- High level of humidity
If you notice any of these problems, it’s important to verify certain aspects of your home to understand where the problem originates, and thus be able to fix it as quickly as possible. Here are a few things to look for:
- Has there ever been a water infiltration problem?
- Are there any cracks in the foundation or non-watertight windows?
- Is the soil type on which the building stands mostly loamy?
- Has there ever been plumbing or sewer backup issues?
- Is the distance between the gutters and building compliant with regulations?
It’s very important to address the source of the odor problem before applying the treatment, otherwise, the smell will keep returning. Once the problem is resolved, SOS Odours offers the following solution.
Neutralize the smell of humidity
If the smell of dampness originates from a concrete or wooden floor/wall, dilute 4 oz. (120 ml) of Osmix-42 in 1 gal. (4 l) of warm water, spray directly on the wood or concrete, and let it work. The Osmix-42 cleaner contains a specific neutralizer for dampness and mold odors.
If the smell originates from a carpet, dilute 4 oz (120 ml) of Osmix-42 in 1 gal. (4 l) of warm water. We recommend testing the product on an inconspicuous sample area of the carpet before proceeding. You can then pour the product into a carpet-cleaning machine, and wash the entire carpet with this dilution. Dry using a fan.
If you also want to treat the ambient air, spray the diluted product directly on the filters of your ventilation system or air exchanger. If you do not have a ventilation system, you can spray the diluted Osmix-42 on a clean cloth and hang it on a portable fan. Then turn on the appliance for one hour in each room where the smell is present.
